Toihoukura (Toi – Arts, Hou – New, Kura – Place of Learning) For 30+ years Toihoukura, the School of Māori Visual Arts, has been at the forefront of shaping the direction of Māori arts for future generations. Its history can be directly linked to past and present leaders who had the foresight, and knowledge to ensure many ara (pathways) were available to the creative excellence and ecology of Te Tairāwhiti. Initially established by Ivan Ehau in 1990, under the guidance of elders Apirana Mahuika, Wiremu Kerekere and others, Toihoukura has been led by greats that include Dr Sandy Adsett and current figurehead, Sir Derek Lardelli. The teaching team also include well regarded artists and tutors, Erena Koopu and Steve Gibbs. Toihoukura attracts emerging and established artists locally, nationally and internationally, perceived by many as a hub of cultural and artistic excellence. He Toi Whakairo, He Mana Tangata! Where there is artistic excellence, there is human dignity!
